What is Valium?

Valium is a benzodiazepine. Valium works by interacting with your GABA production. GABA is a neurotransmitter that acts in your central nervous system. When you take Valium, it works as a sedative, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxer, and anxiety reducer.

With Atlantic Recovery Center, you can get immediate Florida valium addiction treatment.

How is Valium Used?

Valium is administered in the form of oral tablets. You start to feel the effects in one to two hours when you take a pill.

Valium is often prescribed for anxiety disorders. It is not meant for everyday anxiety, brought about by normal work stress or family issues, but legitimate anxiety disorders. It can also be used to treat muscle spasms or as part of tremor and agitation relief during alcohol withdrawal.

Uses and Doses

You might take between 2 and 10 mg, 2-4 times per day, for short-term symptom relief when prescribed for anxiety disorders or convulsive disorders.

When undergoing alcohol withdrawal, a doctor or other medical staff member will likely provide 10mg, 3-4 times for the first 24 hours, then 5mg thereafter as needed for several days.

When prescribed for muscle spasms, you might take between 2 and 10 mg, 3-4 times per day.

Valium should not be used long term. Even with a prescription, it is meant for short-term symptoms of anxiety disorders or convulsive disorders. The maximum time meant for Valium use is four months. If you take it any longer, there are serious side effects, including the following:

  • Increased risk of depression or mood problems,
  • Increased risk of lung disease or respiratory problems,
  • Increased risk of liver or kidney problems.

What Are the Side Effects of Valium Use?

Prescribed use of Valium, even without an addiction, has many side effects, including the following:

  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Vertigo
  • Tremor
  • Slurred speech
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Sleep problems
  • Incontinence
  • Decreased libido

Valium is very addictive, and if you struggle with addiction, you risk severe side effects from drug interactions.

Drug Interactions

Taking opioids and Valium simultaneously could lead to a coma and death. If you abuse Valium and opioids regularly, it significantly increases your risk for respiratory depression.

Valium interacts with your central nervous system, so if you drink while on it, you increase the interactions and your risk for long-term damage.

What Are the Signs of Valium Addiction?

How addictive is Valium? Any benzodiazepine that interacts with your central nervous system brings a significant risk of changes to your natural GABA production and brain function. When this happens, you crave Valium more and more to compensate. When you are struggling with addiction, you show behavioral, psychological, and physical signs of addiction.

  1. You longer care about personal or professional responsibilities or regularly take Valium instead of being productive.
  2. You struggle financially because you spend all your money on more Valium.
  3. You have multiple prescriptions from the same doctor, or you “doctor shop” so that you can get numerous valium prescriptions from different doctors.
  4. You stop taking care of yourself physically.
  5. You experience mood swings and irritability and display secretive behavior.

Withdrawal Symptoms

The longer you avoid help from valium drug abuse programs in Florida, the worse the side effects and withdrawal become. Most commonly, if you stop taking Valium, you will experience the following:

  • Tremors
  • Muscle pain
  • Stomach cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Extreme anxiety
  • Confusion

However, the longer you struggle with valium abuse and any other addiction, the more you risk severe complications like:

  • Numbness in your extremities
  • Hypersensitivity to light and noise
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
